英国ファイナンシャル・タイムズという新聞の週末版にはLife and Artsという別添特集があります。その最後のページにTyler Brûlé (タイラー・ブリュレ)という世界中を飛び回っている男性が毎週コラムを書いています。日本にもよく来ているようで、無印良品の特定商品のことをほめてみたりして、相当な日本通です。

3.11の大震災直後も来日して、東京の暗い雰囲気をコラムに記していました。彼は震災前、日本で桜をゆっくり楽しみたいのなら、3月に九州湯布院で花見をしてみてはどうか、という玄人好みの提案をしていたので、4月7日、私は生まれて初めて彼にメールしてみました。いわく「東北復興のためには東北以外の日本が元気にならねば。それは世界経済の景気付けにもなる。ぜひ外国人観光客には5月に北海道に花見に来てほしい。原発からも遠いし、まだまだ予約も間に合う」という内容です（原文は下記）。翌週の4月16日、ブリュレさんは"Still time to catch the blossom"という表題で、北海道では桜を楽しむのにまだ間に合うというコラム（http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/7206531c-66e3-11e0-8d88-00144feab49a.html#axzz1KV39z6Fh）を書いてくれました。嬉しいですね。

I am reading your interesting columns every Saturday in Tokyo.

We are very pleased to find many people in the world try to cheer us up.

Now sakura is in full bloom but sadly very few foreign tourists in Tokyo for obvious reasons. I hope people in the world will know that Fukushima Daiichi is 250 km away from Tokyo and those who have just missed sakura in Tokyo are most welcome in Hokkaido, at least 600 km away from Fukushima. I went to skiing to Hokkaido after the earthquake and found the sweeping cancellation of Australian skiers, used to be known as lovers of Hokkaido powder snow.

The best way to encourage us is to come to the regions of Japan where the safety from radioactive is guaranteed. Hokkaido is one of such choices and they can enjoy sakura late April-May as you know. So enough time to prepare their trip. (Opposite version of your recommendation of sakura in Kyushu-Yufuin in March.) And please taste local food. Doubtful ingredients are publicly banned or simply rejected by restaurant owners.

Stimulating the not-affected regions would certainly contribute to revitalizing the affected region within Japan, and then contributing to the world economy.
